Manga convention question: golden teardrop

One feature of the New Yorker's recent 'Cartoon Issue' was a two-pager by their regular, Roz, documenting her reaction to manga. So... what was that thing sticking out of her friend's head?

I took the liberty of posting scans of the relevant panels from "Turning Japanese" here. The only thing I found via the search machine was this TokyoPop discussion.

What fleacircus said. It's a pretty common convention in manga and anime.
