Power strip remote switch?

I'm looking for a desktop switch that will turn a device on and off, similar to that of a lamp dimmer. But a hard switch.

I've found this, which is really close, but it accepts a standard power cable. I'm looking for something that you could plug a standard plug into, but switch from a nice little switch on my desk.

It sounds like you might prefer a remote mains switch.

OK, I like that thing. They used to sell things like this 30 years ago for turning off your reading lights in bed, but then I never really saw them again. I guess lamp manufacturers got better at putting switches into more convenient locations.

They sell extension cords at WalMart that have an illuminated button(on/off switch) in between the plug and receptacle. You can also buy a wireless remote controlled power switch which can normally be found where they sell Xmas decorations.

You could probably make one fairly easily and cheaply, but that's not what you asked. Try looking into herpetology supplies. Lizard cages commonly have remote switches like what you're looking for.

Here's another option, from Amazon.

Ahh, the nomenclature is "switch cord." Brilliant.

I thought I'd just add that those switch cords are the handiest thing ever for Christmas trees...this time of year you ought to be able to find them in any hardware store along with the rest of the lights/cords/etc.
