News that grows on trees

What are some memorable news stories this year that could be easily turned into company contest fodder, and how can I go about doing it?

I have a little over a week to create an entry for my company's Christmas tree decoration contest, and I need help. We each get little miniature trees and create some sort of theme, and usually the ones that relate to current events get the better prizes.

Decorating the tree doesn't have to require physically decorating it, and most people create little clever sets to place the tree in. For example, a winning entry last year referenced to Joaquin Phoenix's portrayal of Johnny Cash performing at the Folsom State Prison. I want to win this year, but I am having a hard time reconciling my ambition with my abilities. I'm inspired by examples such as this and this, and even though the shapes are simple, there's a precision in the details that I admire, but can't possibly emulate.

I've got a little graphic design experience, but doing things in 3d is totally foreign to me.

What are some memorable news stories this year that could be easily turned into company contest fodder, and how can I go about doing it? Pinchet's death? The recent election? Because I don't have much time, simplicity is key! Thanks!

Using google to get top 10 news stories, I saw the one about the battery recall.

Decorate tree with little laptops in flames (as opposed to the candles).

Have a forest fire of christmas trees with a laptop as the fuel, a caption on the screen "Save a tree, don't waste paper".

Batteries around a campfire made of christmas trees.

I just love things like this! Good Luck!

Here's the news story:

When batteries attack: The Great Battery Recall of 2006

It was the biggest recall in the history of IT and consumer electronics. Sparked by reports that lithium-ion batteries could short circuit and catch fire, Dell in August recalled more than 4 million laptop batteries. The move was soon followed by manufacturers around the world including Apple Computer Inc., Fujitsu Ltd., Hitachi Ltd., Lenovo Group Ltd. and Toshiba Corp. More than 8 million batteries were recalled, leading to yet another black eye in an annus horribilis for Sony Corp., the manufacturer of the faulty cells. The recall, startup costs for the delayed PlayStation 3 game console and poor PlayStation Portable sales pushed Sony's operations into the red.

It was a big year for celebrity babies - little clay Shilohs, Suris, DanniLyns and Jaydens hanging in the tree amongst the most grotesque images of their parents you can find online or cutout from magazines.
