In the end he's stepping on?

Another song hunt.

So I was given a mixed cd by an Italian friend a while back that has a song that has been impossible to hunt down. It's a woman singing in a fairly sultry voice over a fairly minimal backing track repeating the lines "in the end he's stepping on" and "there's a million ways to go about it"

The voice and song are extremely familiar but my google-fu has failed me, as have my learned music friends. This is the worst music blank I've ever drawn (and I'm sure to be embarassed when I find out who it is). Please hope me hivemind.

The chorus, as far as I can tell, resembles this (the second and third lines change from verse to verse)

Don't leave to chance
Unless you'd rather be the one
How you advance
But in the end he's stepping on
There's a million ways...

Response by poster: Nope, but thanks. It's not an upbeat song like that, closer to jazz.
