Looking for a free xml editor-convertor-etc, with a wysiwyg-ish interface. is possible. What I really want it for is to convert a sort of plant database I have on a load on xls into one big xml file I can use to search and update.

hmm. if it's an excel file, you should be able to use any recent version of excel's built-in XML features to manage the file.
