Best Area to Stay to Enjoy "dense" LA Nightlife

Best place to stay to enjoy 'dense' nightlife in LA area? And in that area, which hotels are well priced (under $220).

Three mid 20s guys are looking for the best area to get a semi inexpensive (under $200) hotel room for a Saturday night in LA. I'm thinking Santa Monica right now, but I'd like to go out for suggestions.

We're not clubby guys, but more cheesy party dive bars-- not sure if that exists out in LA--we're from the other coast. We'd like an area where we could stumble from place to place without cabs (a short cab ride-- under $20 would be acceptable to get to the area, though)

The coolest bars frequented by locals (rather than our version of bridge & tunnel tykes) are in Los Feliz and Silverlake, where the hotels are not too dear. Try the Travelodge on Vermont, reasonable walking distance from Akbar, Good Luck and the Vermont mini-strip.

The Dresden Room--from the movie Swingers--is at 1760 N. Vermont, if that's of interest.

main street, santa monica, has a great selection of bars within walking distance of one another. santa monica is way less pretentious than hollywood, etc. a couple of them are cheesy and divey.

you could try the bayside hotel:

nothing special but great location.

Second main street, santa monica for bar hopping. Also westwood is a good college area. Look for hotels in Marina Del Rey or West LA.

Best answer: Waitwaitwaitwait... AskMe, I am SO disappointed. This question has been up all evening, and this is the best we can come up with? C'mon! Hey, no one loves the Akbar/Good Luck/Dresden/Derby/Rustic/Vermont/Tiki Ti's more than I. Hell, I live there. But divey? Dense nightlife? Saturday night? Cheesy party bars? Place to place, stumbling from one stop to the next, in from out of town, get a hotel nearby?

Shame on you. Shame on all of you. There is but one answer, and it is the Sunset Strip. You've got Bar Marmont on one end, the Roxy on the other, and a veritable master class in cheesey dive bars (and plenty of see-and-be-seen spots, too) in between. Find a room at any of the innumerable hotels -- the Best Western is under $200 -- go ride the bull at the Saddle Ranch, get loaded at Dublin's, pretend you don't see anyone famous at Chi, get turned away at SkyBar (oh please, what is this, 1999?), oogle the view at the Standard's poolside lounge, try not to get run over by the explosion of cars driving 5 miles an hour as everyone cruises with the stereos blaring, take in some boobies at the Body Shop, make SURE you stop in at Carney's (the train car parked across the street from the Standard) for a midnight snack, and don't forget to pack the charcoal, 'cause you're gonna by swimming in hangover land on Sunday.
