Don't want to cry over spilt milk

Where can I purchase rubber bottle stoppers large enough to fit an antique milk bottle?

I bought two antique milk bottles on eBay for my sweetie - he likes his milk uber-cold, and glass bottles keep liquids colder than plastic jugs.

I need to find bottle stoppers to fit the mouth of the bottles. I've tried laboratory supply places. Seems that they don't carry stoppers large enough.

The opening is approximately 12-13 centimeters.

12 to 13 centimeters = 4.72 to 5.12 inches. Are the bottlenecks really five inches across? You can stick your fist through them? Those are a lot wider than the milk bottles I remember.

I ask because maybe you mismeasured and you're searching for the wrong size stoppers.

McMaster-Carr (working).

They do have rubber plugs up to 5" top end, 3 35/64" bottom end. You have to search for "cork stopper" on their site. I couldn't find a way to link it here.

Response by poster: Oooh. Bad eyesight, a loathing for metric system, and no coffee are conspiring to make bad measurements!

Try 1 1/8 inches. That makes better sense.

Yeah, the link I posted was to their "cork" page, which is a frame opened by a javascript link. So use cabingirl's link, type in "corks" with javascript on, and click Find.

You might also look for a cover instead of a stopper, since there's no pressure involved (I hope).

In the 1" region, just go to your local homebrew store. They'll have 'em.

Be sure to get solid ones, not the ones with a hole in them for an airlock.

If you try the laboratory supply places again (or any other place that sells stoppers) with the right measurements, I'm sure they'll be able to help.

The key to linking a page at McMaster-Carr is asking the site to email the link to you. Oddly, this is called "forward".. It is easy enough to hack URLs, once you know the format..

If you have a beer making supply store in town they may well have what you want.
