Does anyone have a source for care-package type needs for American infantry soldiers in Iraq, as written by soldiers in Iraq?

The military won't deliver such packages from random people because of the security risk.

If you're thinking of trying to put together some such packages to send off, you're better off finding one of the officially-recognized nonprofits that do that and giving them money.

Best answer: Try Operation Shoebox.

The folks at Something Awful have had threads on this before... something like this (don't know the current status of guests accessing their forums, may not work for you).

The military discontinued it's "To Any Soldier" deliveries in October 2002 , but a bunch of sites that try to link soldier requests with donors have sprung up since then (many listed in the first article).

Response by poster: Thanks for the answers, but this is a package being put together for the son of a co-worker who is over there, and we're doing this as a suprise gift for them.

I noticed this isn't on the list at Operation Shoebox, so I thought I would throw it in.

My uncle, who recently returned home from Iraq, always requested ramen and cup-a-noodle type meals. We sent him a lot of them, and he was able to make and eat every one. He enjoyed them a lot. I know it seems lame, since ramen is kind of known as being a typical college food here, but typical American foods [like chicken soup] seem to really help them out there.

There's this too if you can't afford to send something all the time: SoldiersAngels

AnySoldier.com is really helpful for this. I just used it to get ideas for two guys I know in Iraq. You can search what soldiers are requesting.
