How to Grow Red Oak from Seed?
My family is starting a small oak business and we want to learn how to plant oak trees from seed. Not direct planting but in their own containers until they grow up and are ready to be sold. I have found many resources to study up but a lot of them lack specifics on how exactly is the best way to grow these specific trees(shumard, macrocarpa, evergreen) that we have in mind. If you could illuminate me regarding the best way to grow these and have healthy, beautiful trees in a couple of years, I would be grateful. Here are a couple of areas I need help with:
-Stages of tree. When to do certain things like change container, what to feed them in diffferent stages, etc.
-Type of fertilizer. What is the best one to make them grow faster.
-What type and size of container. Where to get products such as these: containers, fertilizer, acorns for sale, etc.
-Method to check acorns if they are any good. Is there any other method besides floating? A specific way of floating? Best selection method.
-Best stratification method. How long to keep them cold so they will germinate faster?
-When to collect acorns.
We are planting them in the North of Mexico in the state of Nuevo Leon. We are not 100% sure what type of tree has a good survival rate here or which is the one that wil sell best but we are honing in on the Macrocarpa, Shumard and Evergreen (live oak).
I obviously dont know much on the subject and so any information which you might offer in the form of online resources, places I should call for help or products or anything in particular is helpful. Your knowledge is very well received.
Thank you very much.
