Fix for distorting sound in OS X G4

The sound on my OS X G4 laptop has suddenly become very loud and distorted. Help me make it stop.

It used to be that I could hardly hear sound coming out the tiny speakers Suddenly it's really loud and distorted. Turning the volume down in the system prefs makes it less loud, but not less distorted. Weird.... HELP?

All sound or just from iTunes?

Have you tried the Audio MIDI Setup application in the Utilities folder. Sometimes the sound settings can get mixed up there.

If this just happens in iTunes, it may be you have the equalizer sliders turned up too high. Similarly, it could be "Sound Enhancer" (in Preferences) got turned on or up too high

It's in every application... I'll look at the audio midi setup file. Thanks
