Wisconsin, You're Among Friends...unless You're Gay

Living in Wisconsin, you can imagine why I might want an "angry" playlist for my car right now. I've got 59 minutes so far of music that will help me press down on the accelerator with righteous vengeance, but I need your help to find the other 21 minutes to round out the CD.

I like music I can angrily sing along to, or to which I can endanger my life and the lives of others because I'm banging my head on the steering wheel while I'm doing 65.

I want something that will scare people if I look at them. Particularly if they voted for a certain type of marriage ban.

Here's what I have so far (in no particular order):

Soundgarden -- Birth Ritual
Tool -- Crawl Away
Ministry -- Burning Inside
Motley Crue -- Dr. Feelgood
Black Sabbath -- Paranoid
Public Enemy ft. Anthrax -- Bring Tha Noize
Ozzy -- Crazy Train
Rage Against the Machine -- Know Your Enemy
Megadeath -- Symphony of Destruction
Metallica -- Fuel
Sex Pistols -- Anarchy in the UK
Stone Temple Pilots -- Crackerman

I've also got some instrumentals on there that are just for filler. So far I'm at 59 minutes for an 80 minute CD burn. Can you help me find the next 21?

If you have iTunes, try the Live from 1993 version of "Bullet the Blue Sky." Best version I have ever heard.

Paul McCartney has a song from the 80's called "Angry" (that some say is directed towards John Lennon).

"London" by the Smiths.

"Everybody's Changing," by Keane.

OK. I was just kidding about the last one. Good luck.

I love the song "Nugget" from Cake's "Fashion Nugget" album. The chorus features the words "shut the fuck up," in a cadence that makes it even more satisfying to say than usual. Excellent rage-soundtrack song.

Grab Ani DiFranco's "Out of Range" from her album of the same name -- there are two versions on the album, and you want the later one, which is a little more anthemic in a Springsteenian way. Read between the broken relationship lines:

just the thought
of our bed
makes me crumble like the plaster
where you punched the wall beside my head
and i try
to draw the line
but it ends up running down the middle of me
most of the time

boys get locked up in some prison
girls get locked up in some house
and it don't matter if it's a warden
or a lover
or a spouse
you just can't talk to 'em
you just can't reason
you just can't leave
and you just can't please 'em

i was locked
into being my mother's daughter
i was just eating bread and water
thinking
nothing ever changes
and i was shocked
to see the mistakes of each generation
will just fade like a radio station
if you drive out of range

if you're not angry
you're just stupid
or you don't care
how else can you react
when you know
something's so unfair
the men of the hour
can kill half the world in war
make them slaves to a super power
and let them die poor

i was locked
into being my mother's daughter
i was just eating bread and water
thinking
nothing ever changes
and i was shocked
to see the mistakes of each generation
will just fade like a radio station
if you drive out of range

just the thought
of our bed
makes me crumble like the plaster
where you punched the wall beside my head
and i try
to draw the line
but it ends up running down the middle of me
most of the time

baby i love you
that's why i'm leaving
there's no talking to you
and there's no pleasing you
and i care enough
that i'm mad
that half the world don't even know
what they could have had

i was locked
into being my mother's daughter
i was just eating bread and water
thinking
nothing ever changes
and i was shocked
to see the mistakes of each generation
will just fade like a radio station
if you drive out of range

Green Day's "Holiday" isn't bad for an angry song. (American Idiot is quite apropos to your situation, but it's not all that angry.)

And of course, anything Eminem. (For maximum effect, "Kill You" maybe?) I've gotten the impression he's pretty homophobic, though. "The Way I Am" is also a real angry song.

Electric Six's "Gay Bar" isn't necessarily angry, but you also state that you want to scare people who voted yes on 1, so it might work. (The video with Bush and Blair is really funny.)

Bush's "Machinehead" might qualify. And of course, Drowning Pool's "Bodies" (just don't take it too literally!).

Maybe Beastie Boy's "Fight for Your Right," although it's about less significant right-to-party, rather than the right for two people who love each other to marry. "Sabotage" is perfect 'rage' music, although it doesn't have any sort of relevant meaning.

Black Sabbath: War Pigs is better than Paranoid. There's also a cover by IIRC Faith No More that's okay.

Motorhead: at the risk of angering the gods, I humbly submit that their cover of God Save the Queen is better for an angry album than Ace of Spades.

Bad Religion. Take your pick, they usually wear their angry eyes.

White/Rob Zombie. Most anything. It's not angry, but I like Thunderkiss 65. More Human than Human might fit better as an angry song.

Metallica. Master of Puppets, but it's very long.

NWA. Fuck tha Police. It just don't get much more pissed-off than that.

I, Ron Maiden. 2 Minutes to Midnight.

Judas Priest. Breakin' the Law, which is extra appropriate because Rob Halford has teh gay.

Audioslave. Cochise? Show Me How to Live?

Marlyn Manson: The Beautiful People.
Nine Inch Nails - Wish
Smashing Pumpkins - Bullet With Butterfly Wings
Metallica: I would vote for something old-school like Fight Fire With Fire or Ride the Lightning. Master of Puppets would be very appropriate. Battery is just a good INSANE CRAZY song. Plus, some of old-school Metallica's lyrics are actually good.

Thought of another one: the song "Battle Flag" by Low Fidelity All-Stars. Also features the f-word a lot in the chorus (this seems to be a theme for me). And gets bonus points for having been featured in an episode of Queer as Folk.

(Virginia passed a gay marriage ban amendment too, by a substantial margin. It's so fucking disappointing. I can't even imagine what my gay friends must be feeling right now. I'm so sorry that you guys have to put up with this bullshit.)

Klangklangston: I stand behind that (one) Paul McCartney suggestion (for this situation):

What the hell gives the right to tell me what to do with my life?
Especially when you made a mess of every chance you had to success.
Look at you... Just look at you.
I said i'm angry just looking at you.
I'm sick and tired of sitting back listening to all of your clap-trap
If you could get me to take the rap i guarantee
You'd leave me with a backslap.
Push me to the left, push me to the right try to take me out of the way
Ven if you kick me off the edge of the world,
You're still going to hear me say...

When the hell gives you the right to tell me what to do with my life?
Especially when you made a mess of every chance you have to success.
Look at you. Oh look at you.
I said i'm angry just looking at you.

Shouting down again mahama. Shouting down again.
Shouting down agaun mahama. Shouting down again.

I can't begin to tell you all the reasons why you're making me crazy.
I've got so many answers like you're stupid, like you're crooked, like you're lazy.

Hit me with your left, hit me with your right.
Hit me from the top to the toe.
Even when you chew me up and spit me out,

"London" covered by Anthrax. Better.

Rather than just post my personal collection of angry songs, I'll base these on the kind of music you already have listed: (Though every one of these does, in fact, come from my personal collection of angry songs ;)

Breaking me down - Soil
Vote with a Bullet - Corrosion of Conformity
F.I.G.H.T - Unwritten Law

Nobody - Skindred (kinda like an angry reggae Korn)
Bombs over Baghdad - Outkast (try to find the metal remix)
Bombshell - Powerman 5000
Break Stuff - Limp Bizkit (suck it haters, this is an angry song.)
Renegades - Rage Against the Machine (though any RAtM would apply)
Dead Again - Buckcherry
A Drug Against War - KMFDM
Reflecting God - Marylin Manson (Lunchbox is good too)
Battery - Metallica
Name of the Game - The Crystal Method
Bad Habit - Offspring
Rejected - Rancid
Mouth for War - Pantera
Snap Your Fingers, Snap Your Neck - Prong
Raise Up - Saliva
Scratch 'n' Sniff - Rhino Bucket
Sin City (KMFDM remix) - Genetorturers
PAMF - Skold
Smack my Bitch Up - The Prodigy
Stoopid Ass - Grand Theft Audio
AC/DC - That's the Way I Want to Rock and Roll

Anthrax - anything from Stomp 442 or Vol 8 the Threat is Real
Megadeth - anything from Rust in Peace
Rob Zombie/ White Zombie - anything.

[Use caution when driving and listening to this music. Much of it came from a contest with my co-workers to come up with the best angry driving song. I got my first speeding ticket in 10 years listening to one of these tracks.]

Lots of good suggestions. klangklangston's list is particularly solid, as is the all-Slayer idea. Other suggestions:

Notorious B.I.G.; any other sufficiently direct and non-reflective gangsta rap is excellent for this, and will scare the old folks still.

Old riot grrl stuff - Bikini Kill, Seven Year Bitch, etc.

Grunge - Nirvana, "Negative Creep" or "Territorial Pissings," Mudhoney, "Judgment, Rage, Retribution, And Thyme," "Into Your Shtick"

PJ Harvey, anything off of Rid of Me/ 4-Track Demos. I prefer the version of "Snake" on Rid of Me, myself.

I bet the Butthole Surfers would be real good for this, but I don't know exactly which song.

Slightly more recent: At The Drive In, and – well, if we're talking old industrial stuff, I may as well throw this in there – Atari Teenage Riot.

Anything by Pantera
Old Helloween
Any Slayer, Morbid Chaos, Sepultura, Deicide, Death, Danzig, Carcass, Cannibal Corpse, etc.

Throw in some Grim Reaper and GWAR for good measure.

How about some Rammstein? German metal bands are great for scaring right wing fundies.

I'd leave off the Ani DiFranco, though. That's more likely to get you laughed at. And Linkin Park will just get you tagged as being yet another whiny emo kid.

A3: "Mao Tse Tung Said"

I don't think Ani DiFranco really meets the road rage requirement you seem to be looking for but she's definitely good for being angry about politics. "Untouchable Face" has "fuck you and your untouchable face fuck you for existing in the first place" as a nice chorus but it's not a loud or fast song, despite the chorus, feeding a more subtle kind of anger.

Also, I must say that any aggression found in Linkin Park's music is canceled out by those whiny little shit vocals. Ugh.

While I appreciate quality music that has angry lyrics with a relatively "traditional" sound, when I really need an escape I need something that is loud, fast, and angry. I recommend the following for blasting when you pull up next to the Escalade full of evangelicals who voted "yes" (i'm also in WI), or for your next intense workout.

If you think Disturbed or Drowning Pool are too hard or extreme, just steer very clear of all of these...

* Converge - No Heroes (full album) - listen to the title track here (~3.5 meg legal mp3), with more stuff here. Converge is consistently one of the most brutal, insane, progressive metal bands around. No Heroes is their latest album, and I would also strongly recommend Jane Doe.

* Dillinger Escape Plan - Miss Machine - more technical then Converge, with some jazz/fusion influences. The drummer is insane. Watch a live set here - the audio is crappy of course since its youtube, but one of the most intense bands I've ever seen live.

* Mastodon - Blood Mountain - less crazy then the first two, leaning more towards progressive/art metal, but you would probably enjoy them if you like a more "classic" sound.

* Refused - Shape of Punk to Come - seconded from above...

* Botch, Page 99, City of the Caterpillar -- just a few other bands if you like the above...

Yeah, if you just wanted fight-back anthems, we'd be talking The Clash's I'm Not Down, rather than London's Burning or Bored with the USA.

More suggestions:
Concrete Blonde— Jesus Forgive Me (for the things I'm about to say)
Front 242— Animal (cage)
Boris— Pink
Mission of Burma— The Ballad of Johnny Burma
New Crime Icons— American Dream Deferred
Axis of Evil— Danger Zone

"More Beer" by Fear is also a good one. Not really angry, just damn funny.
