Where can I find the best hot chocolate in Amsterdam?

The gold standard for me is Cafe Angelina in Paris, which is run by the same family as the erstwhile Rumplemayer's in New York.

Try 'Latte' in the Red Light. Couldn't say if it's as good as those other two, but at the least it's fun going there. If you're looking for somewhere more high class, try the Amstel Intercontinental Hotel. If the weather is sunny go to 'Ysbrekers' (pronounved 'icebreakers' - the canal-side patio will make the hot choc taste better, especially at this cold time of year.

Just to make sure: you know that "Dutch" in "Dutch chocolate" refers to the chocolate-making process, and not its origin, right?

I tend to search these things out (see my user name) and when I went to Amsterdam I headed to Ovidius, though nothing I see in my guidebooks right now gives me a clue why I chose that place. I don't know if it's the best, as I only had time for one hot-chocolate-specific cafe during the trip. If the shop Absolute Delicious still exists (and it may not as I can't find them online), I recommend asking them. They make (and sell) amazing exotic chocolates (dark chocolate and sundried tomato is one I remember!). That way even if you don't find the best hot chocolate, you'll have found the best chocolate.

cocoagirl, I think you might be thinking of Unlimited Delicious on the Haarlemmerstraat. I have never been in there, but perhaps that's the place you mean.

brujita, I've had the hot chocolate at Angelina (mmmmm!) but be warned that Dutch hot chocolate is something else entirely - you'll want to avoid 'warme chocomel' as it's not at all what you're after. I can't give you any specific advice, sorry, but the hot chocolate at Eten bij van Soelen on the Noordermarkt looks good. Made from real chocolate pieces in dark, milk or white, melted into hot milk. Could be worth a try although it is no match for Angelina.
