Backspace Malfunction?

I can't backspace in Microsoft office and I don't know why.

I have an IBM T43p laptop running Microsoft office 2003 (and thus, Microsoft word 2003). Recently the backspace button has decided to stop working solely within Word; I can backspace individual spaces, but if I highlight a section and press backspace to delete, it moves the cursor to the the beginning of the highlighted area and un-highlights the text without getting rid of it. I've checked as many functions as I can think of, but have found nothing. There are no other problems with the keyboard, and the problem only exists in Office (specifically Word).
Any ideas?

Delete your Normal.dot template and restart Word.
