Question: How can I make fake, wearable whipcream?

I need to fake whipped cream for a costume. (Ok, I'll admit it: I'm trying to dress my dog as a slice of pie.) Is spray foam insulation safe? It won't be in contact with skin or fur. Any other ideas?

You'll have to be sure that the spray foam insulation is dry, because I haven't found anything (even Lava soap, oil, or anything) that removes it. It is an absolute, royal bitch if you get the stuff on you before it's dry. It makes super glue and magic marker seem like a cakewalk. Just sayin.

Can I come to your Halloween party?

Will the foam be anywhere near the dog's normal range of self-grooming? Dogs will gnaw off any accessories that don't meet their approval, and you probably don't want him ingesting spray foam.

He's a Corgi, so he can't reach much of himself at all. I plan to either affix a wedge of craft foam to the back of a dog teeshirt, or make a sort of wedge-saddle with a clip strap, so it'll be on his back. This is highly embarassing.

Does shaving cream dry into a chunky sculpture, eventually? I could have sworn I read that somewhere.

There is a latex based foam that will be less toxic. cleans with water when wet, and citrus based cleaners after it dries. However i second the cotton wool batting which can be found in most sewing or fabric centers.

Shaving Cream. It is used a lot in taking pictures of food instead of whipped cream.

How do you think he feels? ;-)

Anyway, I second the shaving cream idea. And the request for pictures!

Both the latex and polyurethane foams are essentially non toxic when cured. The latex variety is less messy and very white rather than the PUs biege colour when cured.

Thank you to everyone. After a trip to the craft store, I think I'm going to go with white Crayola Model Magic, since it has that soft, foofy consistency. And I'll post photos as soon as I finish, by Saturday at the latest.

It may be too late, but I would suggest making a big actual meringue dollop. Like a giant meringue cookie. If you made it today and dried it in the oven (lowest of low settings) it would probably be completely dry and super lightweight in 24-48 hours. You could even hollow it out once the outside is stiff enough. Of course, it might be too delicious and your dog would try and eat it, but since it's mostly egg white, I don't think it would hurt him.

You could go with ripply white satin fabric in a sort of 'scrunchie' arrangement.
