Please help me find non-opera classical Chinese and Japanese koto music.

I've tried searching Amazon and the usual suspects, but all I've come across are ugly collections with uninspiring titles such as 'Sound of Flutes' Can anyone name some artists / groups / symphonies for either genre I should look for or name some online stores that specialize in carrying authentic CDs? I've already tried Smithsonian Global Sound, but had no luck there.

Try Koto Izumi Kai, or the Kumi Zai Original Instrument Group. There's also Nanae Yoshimura. Maybe the titles you're looking for may be uninspiring, but don't always judge it by its title. Maybe it's a little stilted because of the Japanese translation.

I get this off this music torrents sharing site called oink. If you'd like, i can send you an invite.

The Naxi Orchestra aka the Dayan Ancient Music Association have several recordings out of traditional, ancient Chinese court music, particularly from the 13th and 14th centuries. They play on period instruments and their ensemble includes several guzheng.

Best answer: The Nonesuch Explorer series probably has what you're looking for.

I own a few LPs from the series and the sound is top-notch. There's no new-agey phase or echo added to the recordings; it's just good field recording. I have some stunning koto and gamelan LPs from this series. I believe most of their recordings are available on CD.

Oh, and i8ny3x, that oink site sure looks interesting. Is it invitation-only?

hey, matching mole, it is invite only, and if you can download torrents and have your ports forward so you can share the stuff, the better!

My e-mail is in my profile, so you can msg and I'll send you an invite.
