Word for Gay Marriage?

New Jersey Supreme Court mandates gay marriage, but perhaps not with that name. The legislature has six months to determine if it will be called 'marriage' or something else. Serious or amusing suggestions for alternative names?

Personally, I think "marriage" is the one and only word. Period.

ummm...marriage. What else would it be called when 2 consenting adults enter into a contractually committed relationship?

I've always thought civil union is good for a state-sanctioned union. The term "marriage" has grown ties that are very close to "matrimony," which I consider the sacramental union. Therein lies the sticking point with the issue: politically, people argue against gay "marriage" because the Church opposes it. If you dissociate state- and Church-sanctioned unions, it becomes less of an issue, though I don't forsee it being a non-issue in the near future.

And by that I mean any state-sanctioned union, gay or otherwise, could be classified as a civil union.

I think they should just call it "Same sex". This should apply to both hetero and homo sexual unions. I am in a heterosexual marriage, and it's definitely the "Same sex" all the time.

I am of the same mind as sjuhawk31. Marriage is a religious issue, and solely a religious issue. If state or federal governments want to grant special rights or privileges to committed couples, that's great. Call them all civil unions, regardless of the genders involved. The government shouldn't care whether or not you're married any more than it should care whether or not you've had a bar mitzvah.

How about "Plan B"? LOL! It is sure to piss off the religious right, since it is the brand name for the morning after pill. (And let me identify myself as a gay man in favor of both "Plan B's", which of course are always optional.)

Uh, how about "civil union"? I'm as happy about this as anyone else (although if you read the decision, the 3 of the 4-3 opinion disagreed in that they felt the only Marriage would do), but I don't see how this is really a relevant question.
