Wii Availability?

Will there really be plenty of Wii to go around for the holiday season?

It's time to compose my Christmas list, and while I'd love to find a Nintendo Wii beneath the Christmas tree come December 25th, I'd rather not subject any of my family to a day-long vigil outside Best Buy.

So are there really going to be enough Wii consoles for a member of my family enter a Toys r' Us or Best Buy sometime between launch and Christmas and stand a good chance of exiting with a new console?

Otherwise I'll probably ask my family for a DS and some games, and camp out in front of Best Buy my own damned self!

Oh, gee, I don't think we've talked about this recently. Not here at all.

Response by poster: Apologies to incessant and the rest of the Metafilter community for the double. I normally keep myself well-abreast of new questions on AskMe, and I'm not sure how that particular question slipped through the sieve.

It's a firm reminder that searching for previous questions is a good idea for regular visitors as well as new users.

I'll try to keep it in mind for the future.

Nintendo has stated they want to ship 4 million units worldwide by the end of the year, ie. end of Christmas [1]. Currently, production is exceeding expectations so there may be an additional 7-9 million units by end of calendar year 2006 [2].

In 2001, Microsoft shipped 1.5 million units between November 2001 and the end of the year [3]. By comparison, Nintendo shipped 1.2 million units that same quarter of 2001 [4].

So Nintendo is roughly planning on shipping anywhere from about 3-7 times more Wii consoles than they did with the GameCube. Nintendo knows it's going to be popular and they seem determined to supply every bit of demand for their console. Aside from taking out some weird insurance policy, I'm not sure what other assurances you want.
