Debian runs just fine on a Mac. Why wouldn't it work?

You can buy XServes at retail?

Response by poster: I was not trying to say that debian doesn't not work on the Mac. When I say its not going to work, all I'm saying is we are not going to be buying a Mac Server and I'd really rather not get into the reasons why. If this offends, I apologize.

Response by poster: errr, please ignore my double negative above.

One more time for the record, I am very aware that debian runs fine on the Mac.

And yes smackfu, my friend found a place that sells Xservers retail. Simple google search I think, I don't have the link in front of me.

Can you find them used on craigslist?

Best answer: Yes you can.

Response by poster: Thanks chunking, we're trying to buy that server now, its a good price. For our emergency need though we'd still like to try to find one with a warranty. A lot of people rely on this machine for their email and their websites.

Thanks for the support timeistight.

Am still interested in more answers if anybody has them.

That's cool. 150 did seem really cheap. I feel like getting some rackmounts too.

Response by poster: Off to buy a server, woo hoo.

Woohoo! I don't know what retailers you have in NYC, but you could buy *parts* to build a dual opteron server from many large computer retailers. Fry's Computers in Portland often was my source for Opteron parts on an emergency basis. B&H Photo/Video also seems to have many components (many video systems are computerized), so you can try video houses.
