Where can I buy a nice tuxedo in San Francisco, and how much should I expect to pay? posted by jjg to shopping (3 comments total)
You might look into Joseph A. Banks, which is having a sale at the moment, and which has reasonable prices and good quality. There is a branch in San Francisco.
For the jacket and pants together, you can pay anything from $400 up. You'll also want a pleated shirt (I like the $85 Brooks Bros. shirt), a cummerbund, matching cufflinks and studs, a black bow tie, and some nice patent-leather dress shoes. If you're like me and only wear your dinner jacket once or twice a year, you might consider a clip-on bow tie - I have a clip-on and a real one and I always open the drawer, think "I don't have time to re-learn how to tie this damn thing," and pick up the clip-on instead.
If you want to go cheaper than that but don't want to sacrifice quality, vintage clothing stores often have nice tuxes in all styles and sizes. This works better if you're a common size. posted by ikkyu2 at 1:03 PM on October 2, 2006

Er, yes, Bank, not Banks. I always confuse the clothier with the famous naturalist. posted by ikkyu2 at 7:26 PM on October 2, 2006
