My browsers won't work.

HELP! My computer is connected to the internet, but the browsers (I.E., Firefox) will not open and websites!? I know I'm connected because my google-talk thing is updating my incoming mail in the toolbar (and my LAN is showing connected). I have restarted my computer a few times to no avail. What to do?

Just curious - How did you post this then?

Spyware, adware, etc. Your machine is probably loaded with it. Do you have anti-virus? Have you backed up recently?

You will probably need to take your machine into a shop to have it serviced. Try the yellow pages.

Sounds like perhaps your DNS servers are missing/ screwed up-- other services, like e-mail and chat, work fine, but the web doesn't. What operating system are you using?

Do you have a router? If you do, unplug for a few seconds then plug it back in and try your browser again.

Do you have your browser set to access the internet through a proxy server or have you failed to set it this way if in fact you do have a proxy server?

HWickLine's suggestion is an interesting one. The following two should load exactly the same page:

http://64.233.187.99/
http://www.google.com/

If the first one works but the second one does not, then the problem is that you haven't correctly set up to use your DNS server.

Response by poster: Problem solved! It was AOL,s active virus shield that was preventing sites from being able to load
