Question: Name for the type of film used in early Italian cinema?

Does anyone happen to know the proper name for the type of film used in early Italian cinema? [more inside]

There was a group of anarchist film makers called, I believe, 'The Browns' which used news (and presumably pilfered) reel film to document subversive war related acts or even just short clips. The film stock had a very appealing grainy and scratchy effect, which I adore.
