Whenever I embed divx or xvid files into my powerpoint presentations they speed way up and there isn't any sound. I have all the proper codecs installed as they play correctly through windows media player.

Convert your video files to WMV using Windows Media Encoder. Powerpoint is better friends with that format. It will take longer to have a finished product but the video files will play more reliably. Be sure to pay attention to the Encoding options and choose the profile that most closely matches the computer that's going to be used for playback.
