Question: external hard-drive cross-platform file retrieval?

I have a Mac, my friend has a PC, we want to share music with an external hard drive. However, upon connecting the hard drive to his PC we discovered that the hard drive is formatted for a Mac, so we can't access the drive without reformatting and losing all the files. Is there a program that retrieves info without having to reformat?

<br>
Unfortunately it's commercial software and the version I used was one from quite a whiles back.
