I am Canadian, living in Canada. If I thought some of my personal information was stolen (SIN, address, birth date etc), what would be my most prudent course of action to avoid identity theft?

You want the credit bureaus to put a "fraud alert" flag on your record, which means anyone pulling it knows to do extra verification before opening an account in your name. Also notify your bank, brokerage, etc.

Canada's credit reporting agencies:

* Equifax (1-866-779-6440)
* TransUnion Canada (1-877-525-3823); in Québec (1-877-713-3393)
* Northern Credit Bureau (1-800-532-8784)
