Why are books and eyeglass cases too dangerous to qualify as carry-on?

Okay, I give up. Why are books and eyeglass cases too dangerous to qualify as carry-on? (In trying to find the answer, I read that Gatwick will let you buy and carry-on books from the post-check-in shops, which, if true, is nice for my friends flying in tomorrow.)

They're not dangerous. The new rules are without merit.
