I'm looking for a map that I can put on my Samsung t809 cellphone.

My phone will run Java applications. I don't want to pay to access the internet from my phone, and I know that I can't run a browser that will properly load Google Maps anyway. I'm looking for (hopefully free) software that I can copy to my t809, and will show me nice maps of major cities (e.g. Boston, NYC, Philly). Being able to search for an address, put pins in the map, and visualize public transit features would be a plus.

SVG maps can be used on mobile phones. It's just a matter of finding detailed SVG maps of the areas you want.

Your phone isn't listed as one which will support Google Maps Mobile but give it a try anyway - some of my phones aren't listed there but it still works on them. Basically, it's a Java app which you download to your phone and which will connect with the Google server to send maps to your phone. I know this goes against your "don't want to pay" idea but I've never found a java mapping application which even comes close to the functionality of the GMaps mobile app. Plus, GPRS charges are pretty cheap.

If all you want is a really basic map function at no cost, all you need to do is to download a map of your city, chop it up in Photoshop so that the "tiles" all fit your screen, save them to a memory card and then view them using the Gallery software built in to your phone. It's not interactive and you won't be able to scroll around or put pins into the map but it's free.

Note: Maps does not currently work with Nextel, T-Mobile USA or BREW-enabled phones (e.g. Verizon, Alltel, U.S. Cellular), or Palm devices.

I've been looking for something like this too... Does anyone know of a place where you can download reasonably detailed jpgs for those of us who can load up pictures (and zoom in), but can't run any applications.

There used to be a place where you could download a portion of Google Maps, but my google-fu has failed me :-(
