My ipod has lost its scroll up/down function: how to get it back?

Well, surely there must be an obvious answer to this. I can get it to play. I can get it to pause. I can go forwards and back. What I can't do is get it to scroll up and down. This is a problem since all I can do is choose the top item of every menu. Any ideas on what is causing this or how to fix it?

Try this to test if it's a hardware malfunction.

put the ipod on 'hold' and then take it back off...that usually fixes it

I get this occasionally and find that resetting the device fixes the problem.

If you have the colour ipod photo (4th gen) then I can tell you that you should hold down centre button and menu until the ipod logo appears (takes only a couple of seconds) - otherwise use google to find out the steps for other devices.

Take scotch tape and cover your iPod's scroll wheel with it completely. Make sure that the tape covers it and there are no air bubbbles. Turn the iPod on and off once. Then, while its off, carefully take off all the scotch tape.

This worked for my iPod - it seemed that the click wheel had lost all touch sensitivity. Then I did this and it did the trick. Good luck.
