I'm due to meet my new girlfriend's father for the first time next month. He has a great sense of humor apparently, but bad eyesight (and is too vain to wear glasses). Would wearing one of these T-shirts be a good idea or not? (Any other suggestions welcome!)

I'm going to vote for a big HELL NO. Meeting your girlfriend's father for the first time is most certainly not the time to wear a shirt that says "you look like a fucking wanker."

Wear clean trousers (khakis or the like -- no jeans) and a buttoned down shirt (ironed, but it doesn't have to be tucked in.) And unscuffed shoes (or at least very clean sneakers.) Once you've convinced the man you're a nice, upstanding fellow, wear the wacky shirt another time once he's warmed up to you. He probably does have a good sense of humor, but be respectful of him -- you're schtupping his daughter, don't be a wise-ass on top of it.

Never ever ever take someone else's word that someone has a great sense of humor. There are as many different types of "great senses of humor" as there are fingerprints.

That shirt is stupid. See, I have one of those great senses of humor and I don't find it funny in the least. If I saw someone wearing it I would think they were trying too hard. Don't try too hard, and don't try to be funny, and if you care about what he thinks of you, don't wear anything that might be misconstrued or taken as offensive the first time you meet him. Be amusing, funny, clever, witty, etc. with your sparkling conversation, not with your clothes.

Yeah, thought you might think that. He's a wacky old man though, apparently, who finds swearing funny. He really likes South Park as well.

But er, yeah. Might actually meet him first, and judge for myself. (I very much doubt that Jo would have let me in the front door wearing one of those anyway).

Commonsense prevails and a possible disaster is averted. Next week - should I French kiss her mother the first time we meet (she lives in France...)

If she really does live in France, one kiss on each cheek. No hug, the French are weird about close contact with acquaintances.

Nah, wear what's comfortable. Shy away from slogans and smug t-shirts, but if you're a t-shirt and jeans guy, go for it. Just make sure they're presentable t-shirt and jeans.
