VLC is what I use. It's a good little program. It's not very pretty, but I like that about it. I hate skinned media players that waste huge amounts of my screen with 3d borders and stuff. posted by Nothing at 3:22 AM on December 27, 2003

search google for the "KLite codec pack". Its a child's garden of video codecs, and comes bundled with the excellent BPlayer, which in my experience plays some files that VLC turns its nose up at. posted by Fupped Duck at 7:21 AM on December 27, 2003
Gah. That'll teach me to pay attention to what I'm doing; I got completely distracted before I wrote my More Inside.
Thanks for the suggestions; the details are basically that I transferred a DVD drive from an older computer into my current one but couldn't find the serial number for the software that came with it (and therefore couldn't install - bah).
