VLC is what I use. It's a good little program. It's not very pretty, but I like that about it. I hate skinned media players that waste huge amounts of my screen with 3d borders and stuff.

Along the same lines is Media Player Classic. It looks like Windows Media Player 2, but has the functionality of more modern programs.

search google for the "KLite codec pack". Its a child's garden of video codecs, and comes bundled with the excellent BPlayer, which in my experience plays some files that VLC turns its nose up at.

Response by poster: Gah. That'll teach me to pay attention to what I'm doing; I got completely distracted before I wrote my More Inside.

Thanks for the suggestions; the details are basically that I transferred a DVD drive from an older computer into my current one but couldn't find the serial number for the software that came with it (and therefore couldn't install - bah). VLC looks highly promising, though. Thanks.
