FriendFindingFilter: Want to make some new friends this summer while living in Manhattan/Brooklyn...suggestions on venues, methods, etc?

I'm a high school student (I'll be a senior next year) who, out of a love of life sciences and nepotism landed an internship at a molecular biology lab in Manhattan. As my home is ~w100 miles east of NYC, the good old parents have facilitated me living in the city so I could take this intership. However, this is at the cost of the majority of the summer hanging out with my good friends from home. I've got a few friends in manhattan, which is fine for the occasional movie or hangout, but the number is vastly less than back home, and i'm much less close with them. Were this one of the many college summer programs out there (I've done a couple), I would already be placed in a social environment with people my own age, who share similar interests, etc. However, given that this internship was highly unusual for both my age, and for this specific lab (hence nepotism), I work with older grad students (a few), and older scientists and lab techs. Not your average friday night party people...

Thus, I desire some new social interaction! Where do I look? I'm a concert fiend (i.e. showed up for the Belle and Sebastian Starbucks ticket giveaway 5 hrs in advance), but I think i'd feel awkward just being like "hey dude squished next to me in the front row, let's be friends." Any ideas, hive mind?

As I suggested here, scuba diving is a very social hobby, and a great way to meet new people. And you can do it here in New York, apparently. (I say apparently because I moved here recently and haven't tried yet.)

Response by poster: That's actually quite handy, as i'm PADI certified open water...but I'm also interested in less...labor intensive happenings.

There are some great free-ish concerts going on in Brooklyn throughout the summer that you might want to check out.

These days, I'm all about Meet In. It's like Meet Up, but without all the hobby specific groups. It's like hanging out. Love it.

Go to the upcoming MetaFilter meetup. They're all excellent people. It looks like they're planning for next Saturday in Bushwick.

Off-topic, but Cornell is nowhere near Manhattan.
