Question: Let them eat cake

Help me transport food in comfort, if not in style.

I'm dependant on public transport to get around, and I seem to need to transport food to a friends' party or dinner or to work potlucks quite regularly. Carrying a cake or devilled eggs on a plate is a pain in the old orange-feathered ass.

It would be great to have some sort of round tupperware-style, hard-form container that will hold a standard dinner plate (so about 36" in circumference), is perhaps four or five inches deep, and has handles on top to make for easier carrying. I've checked some discount stores without seeing anything to suit my purposes. Does anything like this exist?

I should add that Amazon sells them - just search for "Pyrex portables."

Also, some crockpots come with insulated carrying bags designed to hold the ceramic insert. Hot Dish technology is advancing towards the casserole singularity.

I'm a management student at a culinary school and I see the baking students carrying around these cake thingies with handles all the time...is there a culinary school nearby that you can check out their 'cookshop'? I'm sorry I can't be more helpful, we only got 3 months of cooking classes and didn't have nearly as much to take home as the baking students do!
Amazon won't ship non-books/cds/dvds to Canada, just FYI.

OS, Sears sells the Pyrex Portables. 25 bux for a dish, bag, spoon, lid for dish.

You could also call Dish Cooking Studio on Dupont (or email them with a link to a pic) and ask if they have any suggestions for similar things, cheaper. They often help me find kitchen stuff at places that charge the least--or know of items no one else seems to.

ps, legotech, no need to keep signing your posts. If you do, you'll be made a mockery of in short time. In addition, an email address in your profile coulda kept me from writing this here.

Discount stores sell plastic deviled egg takers with lids. I have seen them a lot lately. I also have a divided appetizer tray with lid and like it a lot.

Check out Rubbermaid containers

I also have a Tupperware cake taker, and it comes in so handy. Rubbermaid has one now, and I am sure it is a lot less expensive. Tupperware also has a cupcake taker.

I also forgot to mention that my Tupperware cake taker holds a dinner plate easily. Definitely worth it if you transport cakes often. Rubbermaid's version probably holds a dinner plate also.
