How much does an A/C unit cost?

Any idea how much a new combination electric A/C and gas heater costs? Our house is approximately 1450 square feet.

A lowball contractor could install an inexpensive no-name system for $3,000 or so. A more elaborate brand-name system could go up from there. We paid almost 6K but got air cleaner, humidifier, all the bells and whistles.
