How do I unmodify behavior?

I always gave my dog some food when he was annoying me so he would shut up. Recently I tried the same thing with my wife. It shut her up, but since I give her food everytime she annoys me she is getting realy fat. What should I do?

i am going to now redeem this thread for my heirs. or something.

i have a new dog. shih tzu. 2 years old. well behaved EXCEPT. she goes apeshit when i get near her food. i can walk past it when she is close to it and she starts growling, snarling and snapping at me. even bit my ankle, though did not break the skin.

obviously the previous owners did nothing about her behavior problem. do i need to take her to a dog trainer or is there anything i can do to break her habit on my own?
