PortlandWorldCupFilter: My wife and I are just getting interested in soc...um, football and want to see England's Thursday game... Does anyone know if there will be any public viewings in Portland OR? It starts at 9AM so I'm guessing pubs are out of the question.

Any pointers appreciated.

The Kingston opens at 7am (Daily 7am-2:30am, according to citysearch). Which probably means the cigarette smoke won't have had time yet to fill the place up...

What part of town are you in?

Pfft... Pubs aren't out of the question. Try Moon & Sixpence, as I'm 98% certain that not only will they be open, but they'll be full of British fans (some of whom are probably rooting for Trinidad & Tobago, but won't be cheering against England).

I heard on the radio that Horse Brass Pub will be showing it, if you can stand the smell/smoke..

I also heard that the HorseBrass will be dry-hopping beer during the game ... but that's a dirty rumor that I don't expect to go through, because they usually only do that during their anniversary party.

I've been going to Redwing Coffee Shop on the east side when I can. A nice international community feeling, they open at 6am, and they've even posted a calendar.

The Horse Brass leaves a bit to be desired, atmospherically speaking; the WC may be different but there were several Saturdays this English Premier League season when me and my three friends would be the only ones there, which is not the preferred WC atmosphere if you're going to watch it publicly.

Pubs are the best place to watch things like this, even early in the AM; it's just too bad Portland doesn't have better places for expats and fans to gather.

I saw in the Mercury that Beulahland (on NE 28th near Burnside) is showing games early in the morning too. I have no idea how it compares to these other places as a World Cup-viewing venue, but thought I'd throw it out there.
