90s sitcom about college faculty on NBC

Name that sitcom: I vaguely remember seeing a sitcom about a college or university faculty, where a new lecturer arrives (teaching english lit?) and tries to get to grips with the job. He had long curly dark hair. I think the theme tune was the Eels' Novocaine for the soul, but given how easily googleable that should make it (which it isn't), I might be wrong on that. It was aired somewhere in the middle of the nineties on NBC, though it was NBC in europe, parts of which differ from the US NBC broadcast, so it might not have been on in the US at that time.

As my memories of this are rather fuzzy, any of the above claims may be mistaken, so near-misses are appreciated too.

Well, the theme song makes me think that it's not Head of the Class, but the rest of the description sounds like it could be. It would be the later years of Head of the Class, after Howard Hesseman left the show.

Best answer: Mr. Rhodes?

Response by poster: Thanks cardboard, that's been bugging me for ages. And thanks for taking a guess, twiggy. AskMeFi scores again.

Now for the followup: Anybody know where I could get my hands on any episodes? (For those of you with qualms about legal issues, it is legal to download video and music where I live, (but an official DVD or something would be great (if unlikely) too).

Wow... I *never* heard of that show. Ahhh, but that was my first year of university, so I'm guessing I was doing a lot of drinking at the time - chances are good I even watched a few episodes. Hey, Ron Glass was in it! I'd say it's going to be VERY hard to find episodes of it anywhere... TV shows weren't really digitized at that time, and it clearly wasn't very popular (looking at the episode air dates, it appears as though it had several hiatuses [hiati?] before getting cancelled) so I doubt it will see a DVD release any time soon. I'm sure you could try to contact NBC about it though.

Fun bit of trivia - Lindsay Sloane, who was in that show, appears to be Nick Lachey's co-star in his new show. Poor girl just can't catch a break! :)
