Where to watch the 2006 World Cup in New York ?

WorldCupSoccer(Football)inNewYorkFilter : A Mate of mine will be in NYC for the most important sporting event of the last 4 years. Where to watch ?

He'll be attending a conference at Jacob Javits Convention Center 655 West 34th Street at 11th Avenue, NYC.

As much as it amuses me that'll he potentially miss some of the key games (England & Oz) thought I try and help out with some recommended places to drink and be merry.

Similar Question here. Looking for other options

There are a lot of bars along 9th Avenue in the 40s and 50s that often advertise matches. I need to find a place to watch too, so I'll keep an eye out in the neighborhood tomorrow for signs.

Also, a quick google brought up this page which says:

Brendans Bar and Grill (adjacent to Comfort Inn Manhattan) in midtown on the West side will be showing all World Cup matches on five large screens with FREE admission. The Manchester Pub and restaurant, located in Midtown on the East side have also confirmed they will be showing all Fifa World Cup matches (www.manchesterpubnyc.com), along with the Fiddlesticks Pub and restaurant (www.fiddlestickspub.com) in Greenwich Village.

Although it has gotten waay too crowded and rowdy
I used to catch the matches at Nevada Smith's
Their website is also active here

West Broadway in soho is studded with little restaurants/bars of soccerland ownership/managership, like Barolo and Felix. In fact the entire neighborhood got wild during last World Cup and last Euro Cup.
We watched Brazil in 2002 in the Coffee Shop in Union Square.
Must call places up beforehand, some charge extra, some don't.

Firsthand endorsements are probably best, but Fox Soccer Channel's website has a list of soccer-friendly pubs by region.

I'm going to recommend again the place on 12th & A. It's awesome and has many giant screens.

Also, if you want to watch with Aussies, you can always go to the place under 8 Mile Creek, which is on the east side of Mulberry between Houston & Prince (or maybe one block further, between Prince & Spring, but I don't think so).

Of course, neither of these is anywhere near the Javits Center, but I would consider that a good thing, as long as he's willing to travel: the crowds will be less mookified.

Right around the corner from the aforementioned Nevada Smith's is a bar that I think is called Central Bar, I'm not positive though. It's a couple streets down and half a block west. They show soccer there too and the interior is very spacious.

Since I'm going to be rooting for Korea I'll be somewhere up around 32nd street looking for a place to watch.

"the most important sporting event of the last 4 years"

I assume you are talking about Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest, which will take place on July 4th at Nathan's Hot Dogs at Coney Island? I agree that this will be the most important event in 4 years, since five-time winner Takeru Kobayashi might actually have some competition this year.

Anyway, here are subway directions to Coney Island for your friend.

As for footie, it really does matter who your friend wants to win. There are communities from all represented countries in New York, and they all have their hangouts. Try searching for expat community hangouts in general.
