Question: Help with NYC!

My friend from CA is going to be in NYC soon - what would be some good activities for a Tuesday/Wednesday adventure?

Having just moved here myself (2 weeks strong!) I am at a loss at things to do, or where to really look online for cool ideas.

My boyfriend's brother is spending the summer in NY teaching a summer camp and he is coming a few days early to hang out. He is vegan, likes the muppets, and listens to: bleeding kansas, circle takes the square, majority rule, pageninetynine, pinback, fugazi, botch, his hero is gone, etc.

Does anyone know cool things going on around June 13th / 14th? in NYC or close by?

<3 thanks!

Avenue Q should be easily available at TKTS.

I know it's touristy, but I love the NY skyline so much and I love the view from Top of the Rock. It's $17.50, but you get to choose what time to go, so you don't have to stand in line for ages, plus you get a great view of the Empire State Building (unfortunately, not a good one of the Chrysler Building). It's great to go up around sunset, so you get the sunset view and then all the lights coming on into the nighttime view.
And TKTS is great, most shows have Wednesday matinees if you want something to do in the afternoon.

The Russian Baths on 10th street and 1st ave.

For $25 you can stay the whole day and enjoy their many broiling rooms, their icy pool, their Russian cafe, their upstairs deck, etc etc etc.

Very decadent and yet very casual and old-world. Fun to do with another person because you can talk the whole time.

You can check it out beforehand if you want and I think they'll give you a tour. This is THE thing that I do with all my guests.
If it's a nice day, take a walk over the Brooklyn Bridge. Walk walk along the Brooklyn Heights promenade. Have your friend bring a camera. Everybody should do the BB at least once!

Also...Brooklyn Vegan stays on top of the music scene in NYC. Definitely pick up a copy of the weekly magazine Time Out New York (costs a couple bucks) and pick up a free copy of the Village Voice, another weekly which covers the music and arts scene. The Village Voice is all over Manhattan, especially downtown (below 14th Street).

Aisde from the usual indoor venues, there are a number of summer concert series -- some of which are free and some aren't. The jam band m.o.e. is doing Central Park on the 13th, if this kind of music is of interest.
