ScifiBookFilter: My uncle has been trying to figure out this novel he read around the 70s.

It's a sci-fi book that centers around this brilliant guy whose intelligence is being used for some goal (apparently evil), and somehow by the end of the book he figures out that he's just a disembodied head. Ring any bells?

doesn't ring a bell, but you could also try posting to rec.arts.sf.written, which does a lot of story IDs. Include as much detail as you can, even if it seems irrelevant (cover illo? name of villain's pet? etc.)

Hm. There's Mike Nelson's first MST3K, The Brain That Wouldn't Die. But that's a movie. And it's 1962. I dunno. Sounds like a play on the ol' brain in a vat philosophy.
