Need help monitoring my ISP

Broadband connection uptime monitoring?
I am considering the move to a VOIP service, but am concerned with my ISP's (Cox cable) reliability. Running Winamp tuned to my favorite internet station (Groove Salad at SomaFM) an see how long the connection lasts is a very crude indicator.
Recommendations for a more sophisticated way to monitor uptime? An app that runs in the background and aggregated stats on a daily/weekly basis would be ideal.
