I need to buy one or two *good* books about speaking in public. Techniques, how to build a good presentation, usage of humour, tips, etc. The works. There are thousands available on Amazon and I don't want to waste my money. Any good recommendations?

I've yet to see a good book on public speaking, but renting a camcorder to watch yourself from the audience's perspective is ridiculously effective. Perhaps video education would be better than a book. (I've taught public speaking and coached speech team.)

I would recommend you check out your local college bookstore and check out the textbooks for thier public speaking class. Those tend to be pretty good and basic.

Toastmasters. Reading isn't speaking. You will be best served by feedback.

It's cheap, structured, easy, safe, effective.

I've skimmed several books on the subject and "Knockout Presentations" is my favorite. It contains some unique tips and good general advice. I've also heard good things about "Beyond Bullet Points" but I haven't finished reading it yet.

At the very least, practice in front of a mirror and into a tape recorder. However, nothing prepares you like getting up in front of people and actually presenting. Even better if the practice speeches are video taped to review. And try to get other people's feedback of the speech and/or video, as they may notice things you don't.

Also, check out other people's speeches online to see what works well and what doesn't. Look for things you can emulate. Lawrence Lessig and Steve Jobs are two good presenters to seek out.

I know this isn't a book, but Find a toastmaster club in your area and speak with one of the members. This is a great resource and if they are anything like my club they will let you sit in on some meetings so you can get the feel of it. Good Luck.
