Question: Recommendations for great dance music.

My friends and I are throwing a large, time-travel themed dance party. I need recommendations for funk, soul, and R&B to play during the 50s, 60s, and 70s, as I'm deeply asea in this area.

The basic concept is that we play 1-2 songs a year from 1955 to the present in an attempt to keep people DANCING. the 80s, 90s, and aughts are well covered, but 1955 to 1980 needs to be padded out well, and NOT with cute novelty songs.

I need some recommendations, mainly for great, upbeat, dancy soul, funk, motown, and R&B songs, but really for anything else that would keep people moving.

So far we're talking about Rock Around the Clock, ABC, Dance to the Music, Shake Senora, Give Up the Funk, Apache, and other various and sundry songs. We would love some more.

Possibly a bad suggestion, but you could also get a classic song, and play a cover of it from each decade throughout the course of the night, that way people will hear the evolving styles on the same bit of music. Off the top of my head, a few years back there was a hit "Sway" by "Shaft" in the charts, which was the lastest in a series of covers dating back to the 50's and... hey wow, wikipedia has a timeline.

For '60s soul, you pretty much can't go wrong with any Motown compilations from the period -- there's a reason they were known as Hitsville, USA. The Impressions "Ain't Too Proud to Beg" is one of the greatest songs on the planet, but Motown produced literally dozens of equal brilliance.

A good Stax hits compilation is a sure thing, too -- some nice gritty Memphis soul to contrast with the "cleaner" Detroit sound.

"Machine Gun" by the Commodores if only for that groovy dance scene in Boogie Nights. In fact, that whole soundtrack (both discs) can probably be mined for some 70's stuff.

1966: "Hold On, I'm Coming," Sam and Dave
There a super-cheapie "100% Funk" compilation that they've been selling at Target that might come in handy as well. Look for the purple CD cover with the Isaac Hayes-ish guy on it.
