Step and pivot so you're standing beside them, facing the same way as they are.I do a variation on this. Rather than moving right beside the closer talker, I turn my hips at an angle instead of directly forward. With a little torsion so that the shoulders are squarely facing, and the forward foot extended, you make it difficult for them to get close to you without straddling your leg. Lean the torso back for extra distance.
