I'm moving to Brooklyn, and would like to hire a company to help me get my stuff up to my apartment. Any suggestions? Any tips on moving to NYC at all?

Wow... lots of moving questions lately. This thread had some useful moving suggestions. It's not entirely clear from your question, are you just looking for some to help you unload a truck and move it into your apartment? I've done that twice in NYC. Once I picked someone off Craigslist, and the second time I had a referral from a friend. Citimoves is a great resource for moving jobs of all shapes and sizes.

Tips for moving to NYC is a pretty broad question since we don't know much about your situation. Having relocated here five years ago, I usually tell people that it's not as difficult or scary as people imagine it is.

Don't pick a moving company out of the yellow pages, some of those guys will hold your stuff ransom in a warehouse. Here's a website with a message board you might want to take a look at.

Also you might have difficulty adjusting to the accent at first but with a little practice you will be able to speak Brooklynese with the savvyist Minnesotan.

As any major dude points out, many movers will hold your stuff hostage for an increased fee. This includes some of the most ubiquitous movers whose trucks you see all around the city.

In my experience, its not in a warehouse but rather in their truck. The bid will include an estimate for # of boxes and rolls of tape. They then go ahead and use more boxes and tape than that, and refuse to unload until the surcharge is paid.

You might consider hiring hourly workers from craigslist, perhaps one for packing and boxing, one just for moving.

I asked a similar question last year, regarding moving to/living in NYC. Lots of great advice:

I've used west side movers three times for a move - happy each time. Try to get the Aussie crew...

I like Rainbow Movers-- they've moved us twice and are unfailingly fast, pleasant (poets! musicians!) and not overly expensive. I used Moishe's once and the dreamy Israeli kids moving me were a little blunt for my taste-- they were not shy about questioning my taste and badmouthing my new place. Sue me, I'm a little prickly.
