iPhone 13 brightness goes down when used for car navigation

I have an iPhone 13. I use it as a GPS for my car (using Google maps). Usually, a while into the trip, the brightness on the screen goes down. My understanding is that this is because the phone gets hot. Is there a way to stop this?

I've tried taking the phone out of its case, but that seems to no stop it from happening

I've read that it might help to disconnect the phone from its charger, but I'd really rather not do that

Right now I use a windshield mount. Would it help to get an air vent mount and turn on the AC?

Anyhing else I can do? I like having the screen be real bright...

Yes to the air vent mount. My spouse and I have both had various phones overheat in the car (we live in a warm humid climate), and the air vent mount has solved that problem.

It may also help to turn off auto brightness:
Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Auto-Brightness

Seconding disabling auto-brightness. Also, turning off auto-lock (Display and Brightness > Auto-Lock) might help.
