What drama series should we watch next on Netflix?

We are looking for our next streaming drama series on Netflix. More on our tastes inside.

We have watched and liked:
* Columbo
* Better Call Saul
* Borgen
* Breaking Bad
* The Fall
* Grey's Anatomy
* House of Cards
* Law & Order: Special Victims Unit
* Madame Secretary
* The Mentalist
* West Wing
* X-files

The above list is mainly cops and politics, but I am open to something different. One of us is really into medical dramas.

We tried "The Wire" some time ago but didn't finish the first episode. As much as I remember, it seemed both slow and confusing. One of has watched all of "Stranger Things" that is available, and the other one of us didn't care for that series.

I had an earlier question about comedies, so no need to address those here.

Best answer: I don't care that it combo breaks from the other things you like to watch, Call the Midwife should be your next show.

Best answer: Mindhunter
Ozark

If you are okay with SF cop-ish drama:
Altered Carbon

Yes! The period details are excellent.

And if you ever read Jennifer Worth's (the "Jenny" character) memoirs, you will see how great the casting is.

Best answer: The Queen’s Gambit, The Crown; seconding Mindhunter. Person of Interest as well, but not sure if that’s currently on Netflix.

Best answer: How about the Norwegian drama Okkupert (Occupied)?

Best answer: I’d you liked Borgen, you’ll love Occupied. Relevant as well, as it concerns Russian control of natural gas to the EU, and a slo-mo, non-military takeover of Finland.

Best answer: Commit to watching the first three or so episodes of the Wire and see if it hooks you! I tried it once and felt the same way after the first episode, but then tried again with my husband who was a huge fan and wanted to rewatch it and got totally into it.

You might like The Bodyguard. Too bad Broadchurch and Happy Valley are no longer on Netflix as they would be right up your alley and they’re fantastic…

Best answer: Oh, and maybe Lupin! More heist than crime but very good

The Recruit. I was going to post it to FanFare, but it needs to be added to the list first. I'm only a few episodes in and so far it's not fabulous but it is very watchable.

If it doesn't strictly need to be on Netflix, The Americans would be a good choice too.

Best answer: If you’re up for trying The Wire again, highly recommend watching with subtitles. There are a lot of character names and accents. Also recommend a few episodes to get into it.

Based on your list? Definitely "Blacklist" -- it's on Netflix. I recently started watching it, and am now up to Season 4, and so far it's excellent.

Money Heist - very polished and entertaining Spanish production.

If you're up for trying The Wire again, start with S3. There's enough recap of S1 and actually more structure to help keep in context what's gone on. Then return to S1, before watching S2, S4 and S5. (And I agree with Vunder, put subtitles on -- but who doesn't watch TV with subtitles on?!?)

* iZombie is a crime procedural during a zombie outbreak where the pathologist's need for BRAAAAAINNNSSS uses the deceased to get insights into the crime, it's charming and fun without much gore.
* The Witcher is monster-of-the-week sleuthing in a fantasy medieval setting with political intrigue. S1 jumps around time a lot, showing you bits of the jigsaw puzzle without explaining where and when this bit sits. S2 is more straight-forward.
* Peaky Blinders is 1920s Birmingham England organised crime shenanigans.
* Archer is a very adult spy spoof.

* Brooklyn Nine-Nine (on my UK Netflix, may not be in your jurisdiction) is a detective comedy, it really grows to use its ensemble cast after S1.
* Schitt's Creek, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, The Good Place are pleasant and funny nice places to hang out.

Designated Survivor may scratch the West Wing/House of Cards itch. It's not up to the caliber of Aaron Sorkin's writing, but sure has passed the time on early morning baby shifts no problem.

Dark is probably the most convoluted thing ever made. It's impressive to see something this complicated that's actually been thought through to its conclusion. You might need to keep notes, but I just went with it.

One of one of the best series I have ever watched, The Bureau, is on Prime. It is in French though, but utterly addictive and mesmerising. French TV Studio Canal+ have made some outstanding five season shows.

Spiral, by the same studio is also excellent, and The Wire-ish. Again in French if that is not too much of an obstacle.

Both shows have gritty, complex female characters which is a big plus for me.

Dark. SF-ish in that it centers on time travel, but includes lots of relationship drama elements.
