Looking to get a wedding dress professionally dyed - any places to recommend, ideally in or near NYC? Thanks!

Best answer: What's the fiber content?

Garment redyers are always difficult to find, because of the high risk of damaging the garment, and the fact that the thread used to sew together a natural-fiber garment is usually polyester, which remains the original color. It's not a rewarding business.

Almost nobody will dye a polyester garment. The process requires high heat, with obvious risks. The only place I know of that ever redyes a polyester garment is Metro Sample Dyeing. You're in luck, it is in New York.

Best answer: Oh, but sorry. Metro's contact page says they are no longer dyeing individual garments, and their minimum charge is now a thousand dollars.

I think you're probably out of luck.

And you won't be able to redye a polyester wedding dress to any smooth single color at home, because you must boil a polyester garment for some time with the special polyester dye plus the noxious carrier chemicals, and to do that you need a dyeing pot large enough for the dress to move very freely in the water, as otherwise the color will come out uneven. It would take a pot considerably larger than my largest five-gallon stainless-steel dyeing pot to fit almost any wedding dress into loosely enough.

Best answer: You want Renegade Bridal. They dye polyester and can even do fun ombres!
