What fun and spontaneous in Cleveland next week?
July 2, 2022 4:48 AM   Subscribe

In the Cleveland area next week, with mostly unstructured time. What are your favorite fun and interesting things a couple of 50-ish adults could do, that could be decided more or less in the moment, and require very-little-to-no lead time or advance planning?

Driving somewhere is not a problem, as long as it's not more than an hour or so each way in a day's time (need to return to the hotel each night). Also have bikes available and can transport them. Say, if weather is good- do this! But if we get up and weather is bad- let's do this! (that sort of list).

The most obvious is the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Also, in good weather, Lake View Cemetery.

If you're in Cleveland you must try the Transporter Bridge across the River Tees.

Best answer: There’s a lot of great hiking — you could grab picnic food and start at the Cleveland sign in Edgewater park, then walk down to the beach (there’s a lil bar there) or past the wastewater treatment center and the yacht clubs to Whiskey Island. One of my favorite, most Clevelandy walks.

The Cleveland Museum of Art is frequently ranked #2 in the country after the Met in NYC — it has a great cafe and a huge sun-filled atrium and is free except for parking.

You can kayak or canoe in the Rocky River, also! Another summer favorite.

Sadly, Sokolowski’s closed during the pandemic. They intended to reopen, but it’s not looking good.

the Transporter Bridge across the River Tees.

I think they meant Cleveland not Cleveland.

Funny, we’re in a similar position this weekend :). Most of my intel is 20 years out of date, the indie theater and some of the fondly remembered restaurants of my college years having shut down, but last summer we spent an afternoon in Rocky River finding crayfish and that was fun. That park also looks like a scenic place to bike (though I have not tried it).

Best answer: This Is a fun ride through the Impressive cultural gardens in University Circle and the lakefront. It’s a very flat and easy ride. In University Circle you can visit the art museum , the museum of Natural History, the Botanical Gardens, and the Aviation Museum. I like the French bistro l’Albatros that is in UC. Close by is the little Italy neighborhood that has tons of restaurants. I like Nora, and Mia Bella. Next week there is the Tall Ships Festival, and the Cain Park Art Festival. You can have happy hour on the Goodtime 3 cruise.

The Costa Rica glasshouse has butterflies at a level I have never experienced anywhere else.

Cleveland MeFi MeetUp?

Nth the museums in University Circle plus Little Italy.

The MetroParks are some of the best in the country. The zoo has the Asian Lantern Festival.

The Terminal Tower observation deck is cool. But I was last there in the mid 90s. Looks like you need to book in advance through whatever ticketing site they use.

The week of the 11th, the Guardians are in town.

RE: Rock & Roll Hall of Fame- get the membership ($75 level includes a guest entry) and go as often as you like, plus you get a cool t-shirt. We split it into two days and had a great time.
West Side Market was not as great as I wanted it to be but the apple fritters were delicious.

Best answer: Unfortunately Sokolowaski's is 100% permanently closed, and the property has been sold.

If you mean literally literally next week, the Tall Ships Festival is in town.

University Circle is where the Museum of Art is, and many other museums, and on Wednesdays they have free concerts outside. (Although fair warning, the band playing July 6 is . . . not great.)

If you're in the mood for an Aerosmith tribute band, Black River Landing (about 40 min drive west of Cleveland) has Rockin' on the River.

Asian Lantern is cool but I think tickets sell out pretty quick, so maybe not so spontaneous?

Seconding MetroParks system, almost too many possibilities for places to go for a nice walk.

Mitchell's Ice Cream

Rincon Criollo Puerto Rican Food.

Walkabout Tremont (Tremont being one of our little boho areas) is supposedly every second Friday, which would be July 8, but I'm not seeing anything on the website, so I dunno. (It was a nice thing to do pre-COVID, anyway, when it was called the Tremont ArtWalk.)

The Rock Hall does some outdoor summer shows which are mostly free. The band on 7/7 - Oregon Space Trail of Doom, are locals so it's almost certainly free. They're kind of a jammy prog thing.

I had Jenni’s ice cream over 10 years ago in Cleveland. I still think about it.
