Purse stable high protein dog treats recipe?

I've recently moved to a city with a very high number of stray dogs. Lots of people are feeding with left-over bread and occasionally kibble, but I'd love to keep something in my purse that I can easily hand out that has a bit more protein. Most US brands aren't easily available here. Any suggestions for recipies that might work?

Best answer: The most obvious answer to me would be jerky.

Best answer: You should be able to find some brand of high-protein kibble. Jerky is a great idea, something like slim jims sausage snacks probably exist.

Best answer: If you have a dehydrator, you can dehydrate meat (we use chicken and liver) and it's not greasy and is purse-stable. You can buy these dehydrated, too, but they're pricey.

Best answer: Human-intended jerky and especially slim jims are salty -- Pupperonis are a pet-friendly slim jim alternative and should be purse stable, although they're a little greasy so should be kept in a baggie.

Edit: sorry, didn't see the US brand thing initially - making your own non-salty jerky would be the best bet then

Best answer: Freeze-dried liver is pretty healthy and usually appreciated. No idea what international brands are. Unlabeled buckets in the pet store is the usual around here.

Best answer: Sprinkle some low sodium shredded cheese in little cookie size piles onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, crank your oven to 400F, and then let the cheese bubble and brown. Take it out and let it cool--the little cheese discs should crisp up and you'll have some nice 100% cheese cracker treats.

Best answer: I feed my dog freeze-dried beef liver and it is very purse-stable and also not too crumbly. And dogs love it.

Best answer: Came in to say freeze dried liver. It's dry, not greasy, dogs love it, and as a bonus really light weight so you can carry a lot without it weighing down your bag.

Cats shouldn't eat dog food, but cat food is a decent treat for dogs. In a similar situation a friend of mine carried pouches of Whiskas and Felix and the strays really appreciated them, licking the pavement clean.
