When I see "Txt editor" I think of something that only handles plain text documents that contain nothing but raw text (like a README.txt file), but when I see "Microsoft Word style" I think of something that can do some formatting, like fonts, italics, and text size. Which are you looking for?

Is Google Docs an option?
If you could say a bit about why not Libre Office or Pages that could make it easier to make recommendations that don't feel like just a total stab in the dark.

Response by poster: No, no Google docs. Something non cloud based. I actually really like Pages but it's not available for this verison of Mojave.

Have you tried TextEdit which is on your Mac already? It's pretty easy and lightweight, but can handle .rtf and can import/export from common office packages. If that lacks what you want, maybe check out Atom, which is cross-platform, highly customizable, and also relatively light compared to the deep, ancient, bizarre world of heavyweight text editors.

This seems remarkably obvious, but what is missing from TextEdit (built into MacOS) that you are lacking?

BBEdit. I switched to Ubuntu from OSX, and that's the only thing I really miss.

Seconding BBedit for plain text.
For RTF, there is the somewhat obscure Bean, found on the App Store.

Bean is not available from the App Store. Rather, you can download it from here. Bean is a rich text editor (RTF) that runs on Mojave. (Source: I'm the developer.)
