I live in Massachusetts and have a quick business trip to California Sunday through Wednesday next week. I will be have free time in San Francisco 6p-10p Sunday and Monday and 4 - 10p in Irvine/LA on Tuesday. What cool stuff can I do that beats "going out to dinner and walking around the tourist area"?

If I were you, I would consult Flavorpill.

Where in SF will you be? Do you want to go somewhere close by or does it matter?

Representing for the Bay Area:

The Squid List is, of course, the prime resource for San Francisco experiences and that link looks to hold at least a few interesting options that work with your time frame.

Aside from that and any local theater productions going on right now (I'm stranded on out east, too), I think that a walk down the Haight to any number of restaurants just past Ashbury is really a quintessential San Francisco experience (with thrift and shoe stores all the way!)

Enjoy The Bay, it's a beautiful place - though it sounds like you might want to pack some rain gear.

Response by poster: @kechi: I will be at the Guest Quarters Suite Hotel - probably in the "where consultants stay" part of town. No car in SF. So the hippie walk coolhappysteve suggested might be good. I went to flavorpill and this here looked really good (tm):
>A hairy situation
>Artist Mark Bradford explains how other people’s torn
>out hair extensions can be used to create abstract
>mixed media pieces, at the S.F. Art Institute (7:30pm, FREE).

Huh? There's no such hotel in San Francisco, I dont think. Do you have an address? As people said, its easier if we know where you're staying. If you will be by the airport, then you wont be in San Francisco.

I bet you mean Club Quarters, maybe?

Since you're free at night, stop by the Steps of Rome coffee shop on Columbus and tell them it's your birthday.

I couldn't figure out where Guest Quarters Suite Hotel is either.

In the mean time you can checkout www.sfstation.com which gives a pretty comprehensive list of events in the city sorted by date.

In my search I found some things for me to do in the next couple of weeks so thanks for posting the question!

This link is timely, as I'll also be in San Francisco (from the east coast) on Sunday night until late Tuesday evening. I'll be staying at the Argonaut, so any within walking places I should hit would be greatly appreciated!

Alcatraz night tour? You can search listings on the Chronicle website.

I see no one has spoken up about Irvine yet. There isn't much to do there, since it's a suburban bedroom community. There is the giant Spectrum shopping center and a buncha chain restaurants if you need to stay dressed up and tidy, but you could easily get to the beach from there and see some fine southern CA coastline if you can get a little sandy. I'd recommend Corona del Mar or Laguna Beach, both of which have some nice funky restaurants and beautiful scenery.
